Center for Khmer Studies Mid-Career Program “Exploring Conflict in the ASEAN region: Environmental Change and Challenges in Mainland Southeast Asia”

Program Overview
This 2016 program is intended for mid-career scholars, development professionals, and civil servants from Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, who seek to deepen their analytical skills and critical thinking abilities with the goals of allowing them to improve their decision-making capacities as future agents of change within a dynamic growing regional network. Under the guidance of a senior instructor, fifteen participants will analyze cross-border issues that arise from the rapid changes in three key interrelated dimensions of environmental change that capture the intersection between water, food and energy security within the Mekong Basin Region. The program will entail two required intensive one-week sessions, in August and November 2016, that will comprise coursework, seminar discussions, group exercises, applied skills training and individual research. The intervening months between the two sessions, participants will work in their home countries on a research project chosen by the participant in consultation with the senior instructor. The first week will take place in Phnom Penh, the second will be in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Qualifications
Applicants must be nationals of the six designated countries, employed as mid-career scholars, development professionals or civil servants with substantial work experience. They should have an interest in, and familiarity with, the topics of the program, and the motivation to master the skills described and complete the program, as demonstrated by completion of a personal research project. Participation in both weeks is compulsory. The CKS Selection Committee will assess applicants on the basis of their proposed research project description, the candidate’s academic and/ or professional record and the quality of their references.

  2. A CV with recent passport photo
  3. A cover letter
  4. Two letters of recommendations (one must be from the current employer)
  5. A one-page research project (indicating research problem and/or question(s), objectives of the research, and proposed methodology)
  6. A proof of English Language Proficiency

For Chinese applicants, the deadline is extended to May 15th, 2016.
