Khmer Language Translations

One of the most pressing problems facing Cambodia’s higher education today is the lack of academic texts available in the Khmer language. Addressing this lack becomes even more imperative as many universities, both public and private, offer not only Bachelor’s degrees but also Master’s and Ph.D. degrees.  Almost all of the books used in these graduate programs are in English, and students often do not master the English language sufficiently well to comprehend higher-level academic readings. Thus far, book translations have focused mainly on technical fields.  In 2004, the Center for Khmer Study began to address this need by identifying key texts to translate into the Khmer Language.

A History of Cambodia (in Khmer language)

David Chandler

Covering roughly 2,000 years of Cambodia's history from Funan to the Angkorian Empire to more recent political events and figures, such as the French protectorate and independence, King Norodom Sihanouk and the Khmer Rouge period, David Chandlerʹs classic is essential for both scholars and general readers of Cambodian history.

With support from the Van Waveren Foundation, New York and the US Embassy in Phnom Penh, for the first time, this crucial reference has been translated into the Khmer Language and is available in Cambodia, at a price that makes it accessible to Cambodians.   Already in its second printing, the popularity of this book for Cambodians continues to grow.

Price, 2nd edition :

16,000 riels ($4.00) Cambodia only

US $20.00 (outside Cambodia)

Available at the CKS offices and the main bookstores in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Southeast Asian Studies Serials

In 2006, the Center for Khmer Studies initiated a Translation Capacity Building Project to systematically publish translations in the social sciences and to develop a younger generation of Cambodian translators.  Beginning with a one-week workshop on theory and the technical aspects of translation, CKS identified a core team of translators, who through a peer-review process began to translate selected academic texts from their respective sessions of the Junior Faculty Training program.  The Southeast Asian Studies Series #1-#5 are the outcomes of this training program, each focusing on a specific theme in Southeast Asian Studies, providing a much needed Khmer language resource in the social sciences. Thanks to the Rockefeller Foundation for supporting this training program.
